Amphibian Aerospace Industries to use SPEE3D’s 3D metal printing technology

In partnership with advanced technology manufacturer SPEE3D, Nupress will evaluate and supply applications to the Amphibious Aircraft Industries project with a production service that grants local manufacturers access to the WarpSPEE3D metal 3D printer. The collaboration is a major step forward for both SPEE3D and AAI.

Last December, SPEE3D announced that Nupress, a leading Australian manufacturer, would host a WarpSPEE3D at their Australian headquarters, as a part of a partnership to provide manufacturers and businesses accessibility to their technology through a subscription without having to lease or purchase the WarpSPEE3D.

This month, Nupress, has revealed that it will be working with Amphibian Aerospace Industries Pty Ltd (AAI) to manufacture applications required for the Amphibious Aircraft project using SPEE3D’s WarpSPEE3D technology. This collaboration between two Paspalis Innovation Investment Fund (PIIF) investees, AAI and SPEE3D will focus on evaluating the manufacturing method required to create compliant amphibious aircraft parts by using SPEE3D’s advanced manufacturing process as a substitute for traditional casting techniques that rely on wrought material.

Impressed by SPEE3D’s technology, PIIF invested in the company in 2019 and 2021. As for AAI, they were the winners of the 2021 Croc Pitch, obtaining $1,500,000 of PIIF investment.

AAI is an Australian company established as the manufacturing and product development arm of the Australian owned Amphibian Aircraft group of companies. AAI is the holder of U.S. Federal Aviation Administration “Type Certificate” for the HU-16 and G-111 Albatross amphibious aircraft, with the vision to be a world leader in the development and production of amphibian aerospace capabilities.

The WarpSPEE3D at Nupress is part of a partnership with SPEE3D to provide Nupress clients and other organisations an accessible subscription-based metal 3D printing service for medium to long term projects. Now that their WarpSPEE3D has arrived at the Nupress facility, it is now possible to secure one of the six yearly subscription-slots for metal part production. This subscription will offer the local region and beyond, for the first time, a ground-breaking opportunity to source industrial metal part replacements produced at the time of need.

“The performance of a machined part and 3D printed part can be greatly different, depending on the application. Our project with Amphibian Aerospace will compare these two types of parts so that we can better understand the performance differences between them. We will be taking a cast part as our baseline and then creating identical machined and 3D printed versions of it. By comparing these parts on performance metrics like strength, flexibility, and weight, we should be able to see exactly how machining and 3D printing technologies are changing the landscape of functional parts,” said Craig McWilliam, CEO of Nupress.

The metal 3D printing subscription model now available at Nupress offers one to six slots, each delivering 25 hours per month of printing for 12 months. Compatible with 12 different metals, including aluminium 6061, aluminium bronze, copper, and stainless steel, the WarpSPEE3D is capable of manufacturing multiple parts at once up to 40kg, at rapid build rates of 100g a minute. This means it can fabricate metal parts in just minutes, or hours.
