Deep Tech Investment in Northern Australia: Is Your Pitch Ready?
Croc Pitch 2026 is after innovations that align with Northern Australia’s growth sectors and tackle the region’s unique challenges. What does that actually mean, and how do you know if your pitch qualifies?
What Northern Australia needs
The Northern Territory operates in conditions unlike anywhere else in Australia. Remote infrastructure, extreme climate, vast distances, and a small but strategically important population create challenges that demand genuinely innovative solutions. The sectors where investment makes the most impact include advanced manufacturing and industrial technology, space technology and satellite systems, dual-use and defence technology, energy transition and renewables, agriculture and food systems in remote conditions, resources, mining, and geospatial technology, and digital infrastructure and connectivity solutions.
These aren’t the only areas we consider. If your innovation plays in one of these spaces, you’re starting from a strong position.
What “NT alignment” actually means
It doesn’t mean your company has to be based in Darwin. It means your technology, product, or service can create genuine value in the Northern Territory environment, whether that’s through test bedding, commercialisation, creating jobs, or opening up new economic pathways for the region.
Many of our most successful applicants come from interstate or overseas. What they all have in common is a clear understanding of the NT opportunity and a compelling, specific argument for why their solution fits.
What Paspalis backs
Paspalis is an early-stage deep-tech investor. They back founders building genuinely hard things — technologies with defensible IP, real-world commercial potential, and a clear connection to Northern Australia. Sector is less important than depth. If you’re solving a hard problem with a scalable solution, Croc Pitch wants to hear from you.
Applications are open to founders anywhere in the world. You don’t have to be based in Darwin — you need a compelling case for why Northern Australia matters to your company.
The NT as a proving ground
One of the most compelling things about building for Northern Australia is the environment itself. The conditions here, remoteness, heat, scale, infrastructure constraints, mean that technology proven in the NT is technology proven in some of the most demanding real-world conditions on earth. That’s not a disadvantage for your pitch. It’s a selling point. Companies that can demonstrate their solution works here have a credibility that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
How to strengthen your application
Before you submit, ask yourself: can you explain, in specific terms, how this innovation benefits Northern Australia? If the answer is vague, do more research. Talk to industry players in the NT. Understand the infrastructure gaps. Look at the sectors the NT Government and Paspalis Capital are actively backing. The investment committee will probe NT fit directly. A well-researched, specific answer to this question can be the difference between making the three finals spots and not.
The nine selection criteria
Croc Pitch 2026 assesses applications against nine criteria. Strong applications will address all of them: Management Team (why can you execute?), Special Sauce (what makes you defensible?), Business Model (how do you monetise?), Financials (revenue and cost drivers, path to profitability), Market (customers, growth, retention), Marketing (acquisition and distribution), Capital Allocation (how will investment be spent?), Exit Strategy (who are the strategic buyers?), and Northern Australia Connection (specific, measurable impact in the NT).
The more directly your application addresses each of these, the stronger your position.
