NT Teachers Afternoon Tea and the Crocs Make an Impact

Empowering Teachers to Foster Kindness and Inclusivity

On 7th February 2025, the Darwin Innovation Hub (DIH) hosted the NT Teachers Afternoon Tea, bringing together educators from across the Territory to explore how they can help students better understand the YOU CAN SIT WITH ME movement. The focus? To demonstrate the importance of kindness, inclusivity, and belonging within schools and the broader community.

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping young minds, and this event provided them with the tools to encourage empathy and inclusion in their classrooms. By integrating the YOU CAN SIT WITH ME philosophy into daily school life, educators can empower students to be more aware of their peers, foster friendships, and ensure that no child feels isolated. The key message was clear: small actions of kindness can create significant, lasting change.

The afternoon tea highlighted real-life examples of how schools can implement this movement, from peer-support initiatives to structured classroom discussions on empathy. By working together, teachers and schools can embed these values into their culture, reinforcing that inclusivity isn’t just a lesson—it’s a way of life.

More Than a Game: Championing Inclusivity Through Sport

While kindness starts in the classroom, it extends far beyond school grounds. On 15th February 2025, the Southern Districts Crocs faced off against St Mary’s in a match that was about more than just footy—it was about supporting the YOU CAN SIT WITH ME message in the community.

The Southern Districts Women’s Premier team faced a tough match against St Mary’s, going down 12-89, while the Men’s Premier team secured a 72-42 victory. However, the most significant triumph wasn’t measured on the scoreboard—it was in the conversations and connections made off the field.

“It was fantastic to be at the game on Saturday and see the incredible energy and community spirit of the CROCS. Our partnership with the club is a wonderful opportunity to promote inclusion and kindness through sport. A huge thank you to our ambassadors, Wyatt Ryan and Lillie Rothe, for their support in spreading the YOU CAN SIT WITH ME message!” – Sophie Sparks.

Footy is more than just a game in the Territory; it’s a platform for positive change. By incorporating the YOU CAN SIT WITH ME initiative into the game-day culture, the Crocs helped to spread the message of inclusion and support. Players, coaches, and spectators were encouraged to embrace the movement, ensuring that the values of kindness and respect extend beyond the classroom and into everyday life.

Creating Lasting Change

Both the NT Teachers Afternoon Tea and the Southern Districts Crocs game underscore a growing movement across the Territory—one that emphasises the power of inclusion, both in education and sport. Whether in a classroom or on the field, the goal remains the same: to build a community where everyone feels valued and supported.

By championing initiatives like YOU CAN SIT WITH ME, DIH, the Crocs, and the dedicated educators of the NT are helping to create a more connected and compassionate future. And while these events may last only an afternoon or a match, the impact they leave behind will shape lives for years to come.
