National Positioning Infrastructure Capability – World-leading positioning for Australia

The Australian Government announced an investment towards developing a world-leading satellite positioning capability for Australia. Funding will support the development of an Australian Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) to upgrading Australia’s ground Global Navigation Satellite (GNSS) network. The funding will also improve coordination across government and the private sector and ensure Australian industry has access to world-leading software tools for positioning.

The SBAS measure will augment GNSS signals to deliver a precise positioning capability across all of Australia and its maritime zones with decimetre accuracy. It will also support the aviation, maritime and road transport sectors which have a requirement for high-integrity positioning (i.e. guaranteed performance with metre level accuracy).

Please join the Mastering Innovation NT network to hear from the following presenters on how the successful implementation of these two important measures will be planned over the next four years.

Dr John Dawson leads the Positioning Section at Geoscience Australia (GA). John is responsible for the Australian Government’s Positioning Services which includes the development of Australia’s SBAS which will improve the performance of GPS. John was involved in some of the earliest measurements of glacial motion in Antarctica using GPS. His PhD research, undertaken at the Australian National University, was the first to observe and characterize Australian earthquakes from space using satellite interferometry.

Gary Johnson PSM leads the National Positioning Infrastructure Branch at Geoscience Australia (GA). He is the chair of the International GNSS Service (IGS) Governing Board and the co-chair of the UN Global Geospatial Information Management (UN GGIM) subcommittee on Geodesy. In Australia, Gary oversees the maintenance and enhancement of the National Coordinate Datum and the National Positioning Infrastructure program. Over the past few years Gary has led the development of the Australian Government National Positioning Infrastructure (NPI) plan as part of the Satellite Utilisation Policy. The NPI plan addresses the strategic use of GNSS to deliver a national Positioning, Navigation and Timing capability.

A networking session with the presenters and fellow innovators/entrepreneurs will follow
after the presentation.
