Northern Institute: Infant Feeding in Emergencies – Policy Seminar
Implementing national policies and guidelines that will ensure adequate support for mothers and families to continue breastfeeding and safely formula feed infants during emergencies
The Australian Breastfeeding Association invites you to a one-day seminar to discuss the required policies and guidelines to support mothers with infants during emergencies.
What role do emergency shelter workers play in supporting mothers and families to continue breastfeeding?
What skills and knowledge are required for health professionals to support a mother through perceived low supply during an emergency situation?
How much water and cooking fuel does a formula feeding or exclusively expressing mother need to be prepared for an emergency?
The discussion will be lead by Dr. Karleen Gribble from Western Sydney University and the event aims to educate policy makers, key decision makers, professional organisations, community support workers, and health professionals of the information, support and resources that are required to support infant feeding during emergency situations and advocate for the development of appropriate policies and guidelines.
Dr Karleen Gribble, RurSc, PhD, qualified Breastfeeding Counsellor and Community Educator, Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney University. Since 2010, Dr Gribble has been a member of the international interagency collaboration the Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies Core Group and has been at the forefront of the development of policy, training and research in the area of infant and young child feeding.
The event has been organised by volunteers with the ABA Darwin group with support from the Northern Institute at CDU and a small grant from the Northern Territory Government.
