Liandra Gaykamangu: Designer of the Year

Set against the iconic Sydney Harbour backdrop, Liandra Gaykamangu was honoured as Designer of the Yearat the 2024 Marie Claire Women of the Year Awards. The event celebrated trailblazing women across Australia, recognising achievements in fields such as art, activism, sport, and business.

In her acceptance speech, Liandra reflected on her journey, sharing, “When I was younger, I got stuck ticking the boxes of life: straight into university from high school, and then straight into a cookie-cutter job. If I could have a conversation with 20-year-old me, I would tell myself to be brave.”

Since founding her label, Liandra Swim and Resort Wear, in 2018, Liandra has used fashion as a platform for cultural storytelling and connection. Her designs weave Yolngu heritage into contemporary styles, offering a unique voice in Australian fashion. Her collections celebrate culture, country, and community, fostering dialogue and understanding through design.

This year marked a pivotal milestone with her first solo show at Australian Fashion Week, following her 2023 Next Gen Award win. Speaking about the experience, she said, “The Fashion Week standalone debut this year was a mammoth undertaking. I am so incredibly proud to have presented the brand in a way that truly highlighted its essence—our joy, and love of culture, country, and community.”

Liandra’s award celebrates her artistry and her role as a cultural ambassador, demonstrating how fashion can bridge divides and create shared understanding. “Fashion isn’t just about clothes—it’s about stories, identities, and conversations,” she says.

The night was a collective celebration of women’s achievements, with Liandra’s recognition standing as an inspiring testament to cultural pride, creativity, and courage.
