Steve Baxter Headlines Special LinkedIn Local Event at the DIH

We recently hosted a notable LinkedIn Local – Darwin event on Tuesday, 11th June, featuring Steve Baxter, investor, entrepreneur, and former ‘shark’ from Shark Tank Australia, alongside Harley Paroulakis, CEO of Paspalis.

This event served as a pivotal gathering for business owners, entrepreneurs, students, and professionals eager to network and gain valuable insights from one of Australia’s most successful tech entrepreneurs.

Steve Baxter and Harley Paroulakis kicked off the event by answering audience questions, leading to a dynamic panel discussion that engaged attendees and addressed their inquiries. Emphasis was placed on what makes great entrepreneurs and great businesses. Steve Baxter highlighted several key points:

Reading Recommendation

Encouraging the audience to read “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t by Jim Collins. The book explores how certain companies transition from being good to truly great and why others fail to make that leap. Steve raised his fondness for the “flywheel concept” of building momentum in businesses through continuous and incremental improvements.

Embracing Failure

Steve urged young entrepreneurs to embrace failure as an integral part of the entrepreneurial journey. He explained that failure provides valuable lessons and opportunities for growth, fostering resilience and innovation. By viewing failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback, entrepreneurs can develop a stronger, more adaptive mindset essential for long-term success.

Innovation Inspiration

Emphasising that Australia needs to look overseas for innovation inspiration, Steve pointed out that many groundbreaking ideas and technologies are emerging from global markets. By staying informed about international trends and adapting them to local needs, Australian entrepreneurs can stay competitive and drive innovation within their own ventures.

Revenue Generation

Steve highlighted that successful companies understand the importance of generating revenue as the best way to raise capital. Instead of relying solely on external funding, businesses should focus on building sustainable revenue streams. This approach not only ensures financial stability but also demonstrates the viability and market demand for their products or services, making them more attractive to potential investors.

Execution, Timing, and Markets

Steve acknowledged that sometimes, execution, timing, and favourable market conditions can compensate for less innovative ideas. He stressed that even if a product or service isn’t groundbreaking, exceptional execution and entering the market at the right time can lead to significant success. Entrepreneurs should, therefore, pay attention to operational excellence and market dynamics to maximise their chances of thriving.

The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, ranging from those interested in startups and venture capital to entrepreneurs focused on defence technology, fans of Shark Tank Australia, and professionals from the broader startup ecosystem. The evening was characterised by stimulating discussions, valuable networking opportunities, and the unique chance to interact directly with Steve Baxter.

The LinkedIn Local – Darwin event with Steve Baxter was both inspiring and informative, leaving attendees with new perspectives and important connections. We look forward to hosting more impactful events in the future.
